Exceptional Cricketers - William "Bill" Gilbert

  • Achieved the impossible – took all 10 wickets in a single innings, not only just once but TWICE with outstanding figures of 10-21 in 1954 and 10-18 in 1975. A rare feat achieved anywhere.
  • One of the immortal greats of deaf cricket – he played league cricket for 54 years for Leicester Deaf CC. He started at 16 and was reluctantly forced to retire at 70.
  • Awarded the Sportsman of the Year trophy twice by the Leicester local hearing cricket league, and a special cricket bat by the Sun National paper.
  • Well respected for his untiring work with the deaf community; awarded the BDA Medal of Honour.
