Exceptional Swimmers - Karen Bagnell (nee Butler)

  • Won Gold in a world record time in the 100 metres backstroke at the 1965 Deaflympics, Washington, USA. This was her greatest achievement considering the final was on US soil.
  • Competed in two more Deaflympics: Belgrade, Yugoslavia 1969 and Malmo, Sweden 1973:
    - Belgrade 1969 – finished well in all 4 Five finals yet had to be content with a silver.
    - Malmo 1973 – won 3 more silvers, including 2 relays.
  • Finished 4th on 3 occasions – she would have won a few more Deaflympics medals.
  • Tremendously popular with a sparkling personality with an ever ready smile.
